INSPIRATION...A SMIDGE OF 'OLD SCHOOL' IN A CONTEMPORARY WORLD

"I love to read through the notes my grandparents wrote in their handwriting.  I want my clients to feel that same emotion when they get an actual envelope in their mailbox.  There's nothing like the excitement you feel when you open a beautiful invitation or read a hand-written thank you note.  A phone call or a mass email simply doesn't have the same impact."

The experiences from the stationery business make Ms. Gordon a better teacher.  "I think in shapes, and constantly use measurement, scale drawings and spacial relations.  I integrate elements of reading and language arts into each math project I give my students--and I'm able to show them how they use math in their lives everyday."

INSPIRATION...
Laura's maternal Grandmother, Adeline Beatrice Calabro Turtur Van Dyke, affectionally known as "Grandma Addy," inspired and encouraged her to create Party PleaZers.

Mrs. Turtur Van Dyke was among those few women fortunate enough to attend college in 1930, graduating Pratt Institute with a degree in Dress Design. She then worked at Bergdorf Goodman in New York City until 1937, when she married and selflessly sacrificed her professional career to raise her family.

Mrs. Turtur Van Dyke was a humble person, spending her time enhancing the lives of those around her with her talents as a seamstress and artist until her death at age 90 in 2002.

Laura's paternal Grandparents, Philomena and Peter Niceforo, inspired and encouraged her to become a teacher and an entrepreneur. Mr. and Mrs. Niceforo both graduated from Brooklyn College in 1942, with degrees in education, and retired from teaching in The Union Public Schools.
They were also successful entrepreneurs, hardly having "the summers off" because they ran a thriving sleep-away camp in Honesdale, Pennsylvania for nearly 20 years.  They continued to work well into their mid 70s, after converting the camp to housekeeping cottages. Laura followed her grandparents' example of success.
